Like the Coen brothers' FARGO, Sam Raimi's A SIMPLE PLAN is an ice-cold neo-noir as chilling and bleak as its snow-covered Minnesota locale. When two brothers, straightlaced family man Hank (Bill Paxton) and simple-minded loser Jacob (Billy Bob Thornton)--along … see full wiki
Ever wonder why Billy Bob Thornton is such a huge movie star and married one of the biggest movie stars ( and subsequently divorced Angeli Jolie)? He seems just so ordinary - even goofy plus he's from Arkansas, so what is the big deal about this guy?
Billy Bob is a major big deal and this movie is another coup for his career. His performance in this film is very deep, personal, vulnerable and very powerful. Consider this movie Sling Blade II.
Overall plot - what happens when 3 average good old boys find 4 million dollars? Take the money and run? Report the money to the police? Or make a Simple Plan where no one gets hurt and if no one notices that 4 million is missing we will keep it after all. That way there will be no crime.
Ahhh.....if only life worked that way. Wouldn't everything be so much easier. What if you could give money back that you stole? What if you could unmurder people you killed to protect your greed? What if you could take it all back and have things just the way they were before you stole all that money?
Very dark and extremely disturbing and brillantly clever and funny. This film is a real suspense and dread creeps in at every turn. The film is written so that the audience knows the characters are making "big mistakes" with their logic and actions, but then again who wouldn't? It's as if we were all watching a train wreck in slow motion, you just knew how it was all going to turn out but could not look away.
Main characters Bill Paxton (solid and woodsy everyman), Bridget Fonda(shrill and greedy wife) and Billy Bob Thornton (impaired but insightful brother of Bill) are all very solid in this thriller set in the frozen winter of Minnesota. The filming is very beautiful and the images of snow and frost and ice all add to the darkness of the overall film.
A real surprise - darkly comedic yet brutal at the same time. A story ultimately about 4 ordinary people and the desperate choices they make when free money lands at their feet.
Not recommended for everyone - those who are squeamish or don't like suspense.
Hats off to Billy Bob.
