Comedy Parody of Mostly Star Wars by Mel Brooks

What was your first impression?  I started watching this expecting it to be dumb but it was truly hilarious.  It is still dumb if you think about it but it is not intended to be thought about and I was too busy laughing to think so it is just hilarious.

Plot summary?  Planet A needs air so the president of A decides to steel air from planet B.  Princess of planet B runs away from marriage but gets kidnapped by Dark Helmet who works for Prez A.  Lone Star in flying Winnebago rescues princess with obnoxious prissy robot and charade gets more ridiculous from there.

What's the bottom line?  This movie did not get very good reviews in 1987 but I think the problem is that it came out too long after Star Wars which it mostly makes fun of.  But now it and Star Wars are both so old it doesn't matter.  It is still quite funny.

As far as I am concerned this is not a science fiction film.  But I don't consider Star Wars to be science fiction either.  Space Balls is a comedy and Star Wars is a fantasy.  Both are quite enjoyable and not to be taken seriously.

No doubt Spaceballs can be compared to Galaxy Quest.  I rented the Galaxy Quest DVD and started watching it twice and and quit both times.  I don't think Galaxy Quest is science fiction either.  It is a parody of a more valid science fiction series, Star Trek.  So do I just not like Tim Allen or am I upset about people making fun of Star Trek?    Or do I just think it is dumb and it doesn't cross over into being funny enough to overcome the dumbness like Spaceballs?  Am I going to have to watch the whole thing just to psychoanalyze myself.

I'm going to have to discuss this with my shrink.

But anyway Spaceballs is hilarious and the movies Alien and Planet of the Apes get dragged in too.  LOL
