Directed by Ron Howard, Splash is the story of Allen Bauer (Tom Hanks) who falls in love with a mermaid (Darryl Hannah). The two originally met years earlier when as a child Bauer fell overboard from a boat and she saved him. The two meet again when Bauer is older, and she once again saves him from drowning but then disappears into the ocean. The mermaid has recovered Bauer’s wallet and comes to New York in search of him. She is arrested for indecent exposure and when the police find Bauer’s wallet they release her in his care. The two overcome seemingly insurmountable biological and communication difficulties and fall in love, but government scientists capture the mermaid and take her to a laboratory to study. Ultimately, she is rescued by Bauer and he returns to the ocean with her (apparently he can survive underwater as long as she is with him). Quite a fish story, but Hanks and Hannah make it great fun.
