"Star Trek" Beams onto the IMAX screen...and Barely Re-materializes...

It seems that everyone always gets so excited about seeing films in IMAX (including myself), but the truth be told, it's no different then seeing it on the regular "Big Screen".  This was my first actual movie movie IMAX experience and it really didn't live up to the hype that IMAX is known for.

In no way am I bashing the movie itself, because it still has a big 5/5 for me, but I am really disappointed with its run on the IMAX screen.  Going into the film, I expected the awesome battle scenes in Trek to be almost life like seeing them on the massive screen, but instead they just looked the same, but on a larger screen.  Sure, some details were clearer and bigger, but in no way did I feel as if I was there.  As far as the image quality was concerned, the second time I saw Star Trek was in DLP (Digital Light Processing) which is basically like watching a Blu-Ray disc in a movie theater.  No scratches or anything and that was my best Trek experience yet.

The only detail that slightly did improve from normal screen to IMAX screen was the sound quality.  When phasers were fired, I felt them reverb in my seat so I thought that that was pretty impressive.  Also, I noticed a few more minor details on the ships, but that was really about it.  The film quality was poor and a bit blurry at times.

If you are going to see Star Trek, see it on either the normal screen or in DLP.  It is not worth the extra five bucks to see it in IMAX.  2/5 for not living up to the IMAX hype.

I don't really understand the Imax buzz. I remember Johnny Depp saying that he'd never see a film with himself in it on Imax, although generally he avoids watching his own movies anyway, but he said that Imax would be worse because every personal flaw would only be magnified.
