I love Tae Bo. I wrote a review a long time ago about it saying that I practically fell on my butt and kicked the kids and the lamps when I tried it -- and that is true. I was starting to get frustrated by the fast pace and complexity of the Tae Bo workout I had. One day I was in Wal-Mart and saw Tae Bo Gold. The box said it was for "people over 40" and, although I am not yet there, it seemed that it may have been just what I needed: Tae Bo at a slightly slower pace. I bought it and tried it that night. I LOVE IT still. Although I have advanced to the Tae Bo Live series now, I still use the Gold tape when I feel a little slower paced or when I want to use something familiar.
Tae Bo Gold features a cast of people of all ages. There are older men and women than in most of Billy Blank's workouts as well as some that seem to be younger. The soundtrack is basically 50's music which isn't my cup of tea and kind of bugged me at first but I soon grew used to the songs and stopped even hearing the background music as I worked out.
Billy Blanks is his usual energetic self but seems more compassionate on this tape, takes extra time out to talk to the camera (you) about certain ways to do moves that won't cause you injury, and has slowed the pace but only slightly.
Do NOT for a minute think that Gold is not a work out! I had been doing Tae Bo before using Gold and I am not over 40 yet my muscles knew I was working them as I kicked and punched my way through the 30 minute tape.
At first I felt a bit embarrassed as I watched the crowd behind Billy -- many of whom seemed to be well, well past 40. I felt like I had copped out buying a tape for "older people." But these people can GO and a few stopped and got water or revised the moves to make them a bit easier and that was comforting knowing I was not the only one who sometimes couldn't kick as high as everyone else. There is a 78 year old woman doing the workout (and is featured on his other tapes/DVDs) who can kick higher than I will EVER be able to and that is actually quite inspiring to see. Seeing people of all ages working hard gives me much more incentive than watching perfect hard bodies going through the motions in perfect synch.
The workout starts with a warm up and ends with a cool down as all Billy's workouts do. Throughout, he is encouraging and thoughtful and always pushes you just a bit further than you think you can go.
You will jab, upper cut, "speedbag", roundhouse kick, and do all the moves that are incorporated in every Tae Bo workout, but at a slightly slower pace. Billy spends a little extra time showing you proper form, which is so necessary when doing combination moves. There are also some challenging sit backs, where you sit as though there is a chair under you - but there isn't. That is a challenge to anyone, old or young, and you stay in that position for as long you possibly can. Talk about aching glutes!
I highly recommend Gold to ANYONE who is not used to aerobics or Tae Bo in general. I learned more from this than the instructional! The minutes fly by and the pace is just right to get your heart rate up and keep it up while not forcing too many combinations on you.
As I said, I moved up to the LIVE! set of tapes but I still pop in the Gold every week or two and get down with the 50's music that I grew used to and the people -- not all of whom have the washboard abs and perfect technique of some of the people in Billy Blanks' other videos/DVDs.
Gold is a must for those over 40 who have not worked out much, and a great addition to anyone's exercise library who isn't an accomplished athlete. Again, I stress that this is not an easy workout! But it is a fun one and a great intro to Tae Bo for people of all ages.
Don't give up...get Gold! I am sure I would have given up on Tae Bo had I not stumbled across this tape.
Side note:I lost two inches off my waist and two inches off my abdomen in the 2 1/2 months that I was doing JUST the Gold tape three to four times a week. Not too bad for someone who is not overweight and needs to firm up.:-)
You can pick up a copy of Tae Bo Gold on most websites that sell workout videos, on eBay, or at stores that feature an exercise/workout section. Mine is a video but I believe it has now come out on DVD so the choice is yours.
