This movie is tied with "Battlefield Earth" for the worst science fiction movie that I have ever seen. It was made shortly after the first Star Wars movie and Star Trek: The Motion Picture and clearly it was a ham-handed attempt to capitalize on the success of those two movies. A small ship is investigating a large black hole and suddenly discovers an old and large Earth ship hovering near it. The crew identifies it as a scientific ship launched decades ago that was given a recall signal but never acknowledged it. The captain of the small ship agrees to make an investigative pass but the tidal forces from the black hole damage their ship. They are forced to land on the massive ship and discover that one man is still alive. The storyline really goes downhill from there. There are arrogant gun slinging robots, a wisecracking robot telepathically in contact with a female crewmember of the small ship, a mad scientist with delusions of grandeur, and people turned into mindless automatons. In the scenes with the captain of the large probe ship, he is presented as a Captain Nemo, a complete egomaniac convinced of his greatness. The final battle scene is horrible; it was so bad that I was laughing at the absurdity of the action. There was no apprehension regarding the outcome, I just wanted it to be over so that I could do something else. Several times in the last half hour my wife and I looked at each other and asked, do we want to finish this movie? Each time we decided on the affirmative only because it was so bad that we were laughing.
