I REALLY Liked This Film

Although I'm intrigued by psychological thrillers/horror films featuring serial killers (Silence of the Lambs, the Saw movies, etc.), I'm not usually a fan of horror. I'm not sure what possessed me to rent the movie--I think because it had gotten 4 stars on Netflix and because it was based on a comic book--but I did.

I have to tell you, I was VERY entertained by this movie. Had I watched this as a teen girl, I think I would have had a stroke when watching Steven Strait and some of those hot bodies onscreen. Yikes!

The cinematography and settings were gorgeous. I live in the Northeast and our gorgeous autumns were captured fantastically. The sound track was quite good, which surprised me, as was the acting. I don't care if the main "Son of Ipswitch" was a former model or not--he is an INCREDIBLE actor!

I was glued to the screen and, personally, loved the "water bubble" fights. My husband mentioned that he'd like to see more varied special effects--like the thread-like light tentacles--but I was perfectly happy seeing the energy balls. Personally, I don't like blood and gore (which is why I don't normally go for blatant slashers or cruelty), so I got to see some great fights without the blood!

I'm glad they used mostly unknown actors (although my husband tells me that the mother was in the Santa Clause movies...); it made the plot more believable, in my opinion. (Well, believable for a sci-fi type movie...)

One thing I don't understand, though: the mother says to the son that "ascending makes you 1,000 more powerful", yet, he was no match for the other kid until his Dad willed his power to him? I mean, I know willing power makes you strong, but if ascending was truly 1,000 powerful, wouldn't he have kicked stronger butt even BEFORE his Dad willed him his portion?

Anyway, if you're looking for an escapist movie, this is a great film for forgetting the troubles of the day. Doesn't hurt that the guys are great eye candy, either...
