Not sure, if you are referring to this movie in particular or if you are asking a question whether it is better to see a movie in theaters or wait for a rental.
As for the "Fighter", much as I really enjoyed the film, I do think you would be ok renting it first as long as you have a decently sized HDTV in your living room (if you are not a huge fan of sports movies). I am saying this since some folks are more the casual watcher while some are hardcore movie fans. I own the Bluray and the quality was exceptional.
As for if watching movies in general. Some movies are made for a great cinematic experience like Avatar and 300, so yes, some movies are indeed worth going to the movie theaters for. "The Fighter" is a great film, but I would say that it is not one of those films whose experience would depend on the screen size.
