A director's indulgences turn a fine novel into an auteur's dream gone bad
The Good German, the novel by Joseph Kanon, is a first-class thriller that makes some serious points. The Good German, the movie by Steven Soderbergh, isn't and doesn't.       Books and movies are different animals, and a fan is naive to think that the strengths of one can always be translated into the other.
