The play's the thing in The History Boys. Unlike most stage-to-screen transitions, Nicholas Hytner assembled the entire original cast for the celluloid version of Alan Bennett's award-winning work. (The two previously joined forces for The Madness … see full wiki

Pros: Acting, acting, acting      Cons: Hard to get to know the less defined characters      The Bottom Line: The History Boys is an ensemble piece about a relationship between bright students and an eccentric teacher. This is NOT Dead Poets.      Plot Details: This opinion reveals minor details about the movie''s plot.      The immediate reaction that I think most Americans would have if they watch The History …

I thought this movie was okay and could have been better even with its funny and touching scenes (brief encounter!). Set in Yorkshire, England in 1983, and centers around a handful of boys in their final year of high school. The boys represent a rather interesting and eclectic mix: there's one who's gay, another who loves sports more than school, and another who is the valedictorian but who acts more like the class bully. Nevertheless, they're all brilliant students who are particularly apt scholars …

A lot of the reviewers have dedicated much time and space to the plot of this clever and refreshing film so I won't add to that. 'The History Boys' is both a story and a study. The boy aspirants couldn't be more different. When they put their heads together, they're stunning. All seem so affable to one another and chime in like solo parts to a Greek chorus.     The real debate comes over education. Enter test expert Mr. Irwin …

Anyone who can watch the rolling credits at the end of THE HISTORY BOYS without tearful eyes simply hasn't been paying attention to this intelligent, richly comic, philosophical and tender tale of eight boys ostensibly preparing for exams but also preparing for life. The writing by Alan Bennett closely adapted from his prize winning play that was on the boards of theaters around the globe before being captured for posterity on film is 'rich and strange' and so full of those values of achieving a …

"The History Boys"    Brilliance    Amos Lassen and Cinema Pride    "The History Boys" is a stellar film and is a delight to watch. It is also one of the few mainstream films that manages to pull off a gay theme and survive--not only does it survive, it reaches new heights. Allen Bennett has crafted the most literate of scripts and the cast that binds the story together give incredible performances with Stephen Campbell Moore and Samuel …
