If you're a fan of Gossip Girl, you might know of two characters named Lily Van Der Woodsen and Bart Bass. These two names are a reference to Edith Wharton's The House of Mirth, a 1905 novel featuring protagonist Lily Bart, an young unmarried woman navigating the cut-throat politics of New York high society.  Since Wharton's story is more powerful as a novel than a screenplay, the film adaptation really had the potential to become another dead-in-the-water period film.
