1 review about The Invaders - Episode 1: Beach Head (1967)

A pilot episode that is more disjointed than usual

The Cold War between the United States and the Soviet Union bred many forms of paranoia; one of the greatest was the silent invasion and the seizing of power from within. That fear was exploited in the science fiction television series "The Invaders." The lead character is a man named David Vincent and late one night while sleeping in his car in an isolated area he observes an alien ship landing. Their mission is to take human form and silently infiltrate the United States and eventually take it over.
Quite naturally, few people believe Vincent's story and he is on a solo quest to track down and defeat the invaders. One of the coolest aspects of the series was that when one of the aliens died, they vaporized into a red cloud that included their clothing and equipment. Unfortunately, that plot feature was not used in this episode.
All initial episodes of a series are somewhat disjointed as there is no pre-existing base upon which to work. However, this one is more disjointed than usual, at times it staggers along with no effective transition from scene to scene. Some of the logical gaps are significant, for example the location of the initial sighting is by a closed and abandoned diner. When Vincent brings the police back to the location, the aliens have changed the sign with the name of the diner. This of course would have been a very stupid move, the local police would know the name of the diner and changing the sign would be a red flag that something unusual was going on. The last thing that aliens intelligent enough to engage in interplanetary flight would do would be to change a road sign and attract attention.
It has been years since I watched an episode of this series and after viewing this one; I have very little interest in seeing others. However, it did make me appreciate the quality of the original series of "Star Trek", one of the advantages of any kind of quality is when it is compared to other items in the genre that are very weak.
