They used to play this movie CONSTANTLY on Comedy Central during the late 1990s, along with movies like "She Devil" and "Top Secret". Unlike the latter movies, "The Money Pit" is actually hilarious.

The film follows the lives of Walter Fielding and his wife Anna, played by Tom Hanks and Shelly Long after they are kicked out of a friends New York City apartment they had been staying in. Forced to find a house, the couple move out to middle-of-nowhere Long Island. It is clear that both Walter and Anna work in New York City, so why they chose a house in a rural area so far away is beyond me. But hey, anything for the comedy, right?

Walter and his wife end up purchasing a GIGANTIC mansion for a really incredible price. The day they move in they figure out why it was so cheap - the stairs collapse while Walter is on them, the electricity burns out by comically setting most of the house on fire, and several pieces of furniture on the upper levels collapse through the floor and land on lower levels in the house: Walter and Anna have purchased a "money pit".

Most of the movie is spent watching the house's renovations backfire on Walter&Anna, and the complications it gives their relationship. I won't lie - the movie is pretty corny, relying mostly on slapstick, physical comedy.

I love this movie because Tom Hanks is already a pretty funny man, and nothing could be funnier than watching a funny man wrestle with inanimate objects acting against his best interests.

A young Tom Hanks at his best! So classic.
