Judy Irving's "Wild Parrots of Telegraph Hill" is an interesting take on the nature documentary genre. It focuses on a group of parrots living in San Francisco. One of the most amazing things about the film is how it reveals the intimate relationships among parrots in a way not possible just observing parrots in the wild. An inherently interesting, funny and beautiful story told from a HIGHLY subjective point-of-view, THE WILD PARROTS OF TELEGRAPH HILL is a documentary for all ages, and would actually make an excellent introduction to the form for younger children. I say that, because I remember many years ago bringing home a documentary for my young daughter and her friends to watch (SPELLBOUND) and they were frankly puzzled as to what a documentary could be. Mark Bittner came to San Francisco in the 1970s with a dream of making it as a songwriter-musician. When that dream failed him he lived on the street, taking odd jobs and exploring Eastern religions.    While living on Telegraph Hill as a caretaker, he began to notice a growing flock of wild parrots in the area. I found this excellent film to be warm, funny, fascinating, and uplifting. Even though I live across the Bay from SF, I was unaware of the wild parrots until this film and the resulting publicity came out. For a big, sometimes impersonal city, I was thrilled to learn that someone like Mark Bittner could survive and live decently without working a traditional job, while caring for the birds and studying them.
