Short Attention Span Summary (SASS):

1. April (Helen Hunt) is married to Ben (Matthew Broderick)
2. April's an elementary school teacher with a ticking biological clock
3. Ben's still playing Ferris Bueller
4. Ben takes more than a day off
5. April's carrying the weight of the world on her shoulders, as evidenced by the wrinkles and frown lines on her face, and then she meets Frank (Colin Firth)
6. Firth is as adorable as ever, doing his inept, bumbling, tongue-tied cutie-pie shtick
7. Enter the Divine Bette Midler to steal the show as April's supposed birth mother
8. Complicated life scenarios follow, with people finding people, losing people, connecting and reconnecting with people.

Billed as a romantic comedy, this one veers more towards the drama category, and if not for Midler and Firth, there wouldn't be much comedy at all. Hunt plays "intense", "wound up", "confused" and "uptight" to the max, while showing that underneath the teacher's wardrobe, there lurks a woman of fiery passion, at least on a quickie basis. Keep an eye out for a guest appearance by Salman Rushdie.

I'd say this movie deserves a 3.5 star rating, but because of Midler and Firth I'm going to round it up.
