Two Girls

The struggles of two girls who occasionally play lacrosse together are the subject of "Toe to Toe". We meet the two girls separately and we see them glaring at each other with jealousy. The film looks at race, class, sexuality and friendship with candor. It is honest and compassionate as it looks at contemporary youth. Our two main characters are rivals as well as teammates at a high school in Washington.
Tosha (Sonequa Martin) lives in the housing projects and she is determined to lose every trace of her background. She wants to win a scholarship to Princeton and the reason that she plays lacrosse is because no other black girls do. She is good at math because people do not expect girls to excel and she has an idealized vision of herself that she finds hard to live up to. She does not see her own anger and self pity because her reserve is disciplined.

Jesse (Louisa Krause) is the opposite of Tosha in every aspect. She is Caucasian and wealthy, neglected by her mother and somewhat out of control. She is quick to act on every impulse and she seems to be self-destructive. Her academic life is not so good and is quite free sexually.
The film follows the girls through their daily routines and examines their relationships with their families and with others. Tosha is focused and introspective but we watch as she loses her self composure. Jesse is loose and completely comfortable the majority of time. The two girls are attracted to the same boy who is not at peace with whom he is and comes across as bring cruel.
Both girls must make choices which will affect their futures and each girl is both shrewd and vulnerable. The performances are excellent and sensitive. Emily Abt, the director does an excellent job here and we see how hard it is to be an adolescent.
