Pros: The Bat Man

Cons: sigh

The Bottom Line: I hope you are learning to trust my recommendations by now

See, once there was this antelope man and he was in love with this wolf woman ….. no, seriously folks, I saw it so it has to be true. I mean, it’s the Twilight People, give me a break.

What are The Twilight People? Beats the shorts off of me how they came up with that name cause there ain’t jackshi!! twilight about them.

It all starts one bright and sunny day when Matt Farrell (John Ashley) is merrily swimming away, doing a little diving, if you will. Next thing you know, this puppy is laying in a cave with a coupla mean dudes looking over him. Oh, and one entrancing babe.

Turns out the babe, Neva (Pat Woodell), is the daughter of evil Dr. Gordon (Ken Metcalfe), who along with his equally demented neo-Nazi sidekick Steinman (Jan Merlin), is playing the old gene splice game. Striving for a better race, wouldn’t ya know?

What does this race consist of? Well, the antelope man and wolf woman, of course, but also the ape man, bat man, panther woman and finally the mole woman. Also, lurking in the jungle is some creature that apparently got away – perhaps it is the twilight people? The entire concept escapes me. How could this be a more perfect race? But ….

Neva gets a major set of the warm fuzzies for Matt Farrell and wants to help him escape before he turns into a clam or turtle or something. Plus she has a huge softie for the other ‘experiments’ and decides to take them along for the ride.

And that is how I find the antelope man and the wolf woman sitting in the jungle sharing some humus.

The bad guys chase them blah, blah, blah and then the doctor tries to sneak out and blah, blah, blah and suddenly the ‘dead wife’ shows up. Huh?

Well, it ain’t done, but I am.

If you are looking for acting kudos here kids, you are gonna be sadly disappointed. I’m not passing them out. And make-up (cough…cough) please, my 7 year old granddaughter could do better. If you think this movie reeks of Island of Dr. Moreau that is because it was adapted from H. G. Wells novel by the same name and written for screen by Jerome Small and Eddie Romero. Eddie Romero was also responsible for the directing in this bust.

John Ashley, who played the part of Matt Farrell, was long known for his schlock in B-rated movies, especially after teaming up with Romero and releasing several productions together. He was also involved with Coppola in Apocalypse Now. Finally ending his lucrative career in beach and blood-letting movies, he retired to Puerto Rica, entering a similar field with equally mass produced B-rated movies. In the end, Ashley returned to NY, co-producing many TV shows. The most remembered would be A-Team. Ashley died in 1997 from a heart attack at the age of 63. He was married to Deborah Walley, who also starred in his beach blanket movies along side him.

Before I forget, the cast of animals (you are in for one surprise):
Ken Metcalfe… Kuzma, the Antelope Man
Mona Morena .... Lupa, the Wolf Woman
Pam Grier .... Ayesa, the Panther Woman (yes, before the Foxy Brown days!)
Tony Gosalvez .... Darmo, the Bat Man
Kim Ramos .... Primo, the Ape Man

You gotta love the Bat Man in the end of the movie, he’s just so darn cute!

This is a bad gig kids, save yer pennies.

Thanks,
Susi
