Pros: That darling red bikini

Cons: well, um, you decide

The Bottom Line: For vampire lovers only, unless you like hot naked babes

Released 20 years after Daltrey starred as the deaf, dumb & blind boy in Tommy, Roger Daltrey once again takes to the screen as the supreme vampire. As in Tommy, he leads the hordes that follow his guidance.

The story starts on some planet, I think it is called Dracule (surprise) where General Demos (Brian Bloom) and Vlad (Daltrey) are going before the High Counsel for trial. When he enters the judgment chamber, Vlad is saved by his fellow troopers, Demos & Sallah (Corinna Harney) and they in turn kill all the High Counsel members. Unfortunately, the high poompah is the stepfather of beautiful Ella. When she sees the destruction, she vows to seek her vengeance, although the stepfather begs her not to do so, and she becomes Vampirella (Talisa Soto).

Vlad and group fly away to Earth and began a new life, Vampirella follows them. Unfortunately her ship crashes on Mars, where she resides for 30 centuries until an Earth exploration team lands and carts her off in her sleeping state. As a side note, I laughed while they were flying back to Earth and the captain of the ship asks his fellow shipmate about a sound he had heard. He says “Didn’t you ever see It Came From Outer Space?”, a truly miserable movie by the way that deals with the same circumstances. Oh well, it struck me funny.

So, eventually Vampirella makes it to Earth and begins to track down the evildoers that killed her stepfather and gang. Now on Dracule the vampires do not consume human blood but use a bioengineered product – except for Vlad & gang and that is why they were on trial – but the gang once it reaches Earth turns to humans in full force, leaving the walking dead in their wake. Vampirella has brought her chemically engineered blood food with her, so she doesn’t have to step to that level.

Vampirella meets up with some vampire hunting team sponsored by the government and develops a major set of the hornies for the lead guy, none other than Adam Van Helsing (Richard Joseph Paul), the son of the original Van Helsing, vampire hunting guy in all vampire movies. Sigh.

To cut a really long story short, they join forces to fight against the bad vampires. There!

This was written by Gary Gerani, developed from the original Vampirella concept in the comic books. Somewhere in the background Roger Corman had his hand in it, so it is a given that Rusty Meyers is in the movie as well. He plays the part of Quinn who was either Van Helsing’s sidekick or Vlad’s sidekick. My memory isn’t what it used to be. My personal take is that Rusty Meyers is really Corman’s screen name so that he can star in his own movies – grin.

The costumes used in the movie were, um, different. A lot of latex involved here kids, those things had to be hotter than Hell, except for Vampirella’s costume, which was skimpy to the nth degree. It was some hot red bikini thing (latex) with these little strings attaching the top to the bottom and a lovely bat emblazoned over her ‘woo’. Needless to say, no one was watching her for her acting abilities. Besides the costume, she was very easy on the eyes anyway, ahem.

Roger Daltrey, why? And he sings as well, some song called “Bleed For Me”. His part on Earth is a big singing sensation known as Jamie Blood – please save me! He’s old folks, he looks old and he sounds old. His voice was horrible and he tried way too hard to revive his old The Who persona and it wasn’t coming off at all. Don’t even ask about the acting.

I will mention though, at the ending of the movie when Vampirella is chasing him, he goes into that running gig again, much like he did in Tommy, climbing stairs and running all over the place. As I commented in Tommy and I’ll comment again, if that is really Daltrey doing all that running, he is in a lot better shape than he appears. My question is however, they could turn into bats, why didn’t they just fly? Oh well.

Would I consider this a good movie? Well, that outfit on Talisa Soto counts for something doesn’t it?

Directed by Jim Wynorski. A definite R rating for violence and nudity.
