That's the ratio of 5-star reviews to 1-star reviews. I can't really understand either rating. The 1-star reviews chiefly moan that the 'humor is too dumb' for their intellectual appreciation, an unconvincing protestation given their syntax and spelling. Many of the 5-stars seem to be written by cult fans of Christopher Guest, the author, director and star of the film. I'm shamed to confess that I'd never heard of Mr. Guest before. "Waiting for Guffman" was vociferously recommended to me by the …

I didn't enjoy "For Your Consideration" but I decided to give director Christopher Guest another chance by seeing "Waiting for Guffman." Guest plays as Corky a quirky stage director celebrates his small town's history by putting on a play featuring local residents. Having recruiting a fun cast of SCTV and SNL make this one of the most creative comedies I've seen. It has many funny moments, especially from Corky. Pros: Guest, Levy, Hitchcock, Posey, Willard, O'Hara, Balaban, some funny moments     Cons: a little slow and one-note; play itself isn't very funny     The Bottom Line: "It's a Zen thing, like how many babies fit in a tire." - Corky St. Clair     Plot Details: This opinion reveals major details about the movie''s plot. I’ve now seen the four major Christopher Guest mockumentaries, and I hereby put them in this order:      …

This film is one of those rare modern day comedies, one that makes you think. For a lot of people, mulitple viewings will probably be necessary to "get" the movie. However, for anyone who has had experience in community theatre, the film is a humorous riot from beginning to end. Christopher Guest is a genius! The film is a mockumentary about Corky St. Claire (Guest) a New Yorker hoping that his new musical "Red, White, and Blaire" celebrating the town of Blaire, Missouri will mark his Broadway comeback. …

It just may be. There are certainly other great "theatre" movies (NOISES OFF, eg) but none have come close to catching the true cheesiness of community theatre (I should know, my job is running a community theatre). This movie is almost too funny sometimes...everything rings true. My favorite scenes include Corky's burst of anger at the city council, the Remains of the Day lunchbox, the...oh, jeez, the list just goes on. The movie also has a sweetness and sadness to it (just like SPINAL TAP). These …
