Who the #$&% is Jackson Pollock? - 2006

Pros: made for an interesting watch but I wasn't surprised by the snobs

Cons: none for me

The Bottom Line:
"Yeah she looks like a painting
Jackson Pollock's number 5
Come into the forest and taste the trees"
~Stone Roses

I have no idea how I came across Who the #$&% Is Jackson Pollock? but there I was, laughing like everyone else at the antics of Teri Horton and her quest.  The documentary is directed & written by Harry Moses and is rated PG-13 for language.  I'm surprised they didn't poo-poo the smoking and drinking as well.

The story:
As with most documentaries it is simply an impression one, or a group, has on an idea.  The idea in this case was a woman named Teri Horton and a painting she purchased for $5 at a thrift store.  Teri is a fairly hard woman, her face showing the landscape of her existence.  She's a smoker and a drinker and apparently a decent friend to those that buddy with her at the VFW.   When she's not nestled up to the bar at the VFW she is a long haul trucker.  She is 73 years old.

When one of her friends showed signs of depression, she made one of her famous stops at the local thrift store to pick up a little something to perk her friend up.  What she bought, after some price haggling, was what she and her friend considered the ugliest painting they had ever seen.  Why she would make this purchase makes one ponder.  Irregardless, the dang painting was so huge it didn't fit through the door of the friend's trailer [no mobile home here, it is definitely a trailer] or through Teri's door for that matter.  She put it in a yard sale.

The local art teacher commented she might have a "Jackson Pollock" painting, worth thousands, and Teri said: "Who the #$&% Is Jackson Pollock?".   From this point on the documentary delves into Teri's quest to authenticate the painting and procure a provenance, thus increasing her chances for making the big buck.

The majority of the piece is a lot of talking heads trying to prove they actually make sense; notably Thomas Hoving, Peter Paul Biro, Nick Carone, and Tod Volpe.   It is interspersed with the quips of Teri and her cohorts with a lot of colorful language.  They stand and look at it, scratch at it, lean back and even smell it.  Biro takes samples and even locates a fingerprint he says can be tied to Pollock.  But in the end the talking heads all agreed to disagree and no one will confirm or deny the authenticity of the dang thing.

All in all, Teri Horton had her Andy Warhol 15 minutes and made the rounds of TV talk shows.  I'll give her one thing, she was tenacious as the devil.   She wasn't necessarily bright - she was offered $2 million for the painting from the get-go and turned the offer down.    Even when offered $9 million, she said she was holding out for $50 million.

Overall impression:
Hype, fake, blue-nosed snobs ...  I mean, really?  Is she friggin serious?  Hell, it very well could be a Pollock.   Who the #$&% cares?  They will never give in and apparently she won't either.
