What’s This a Serious Movie About The Lives of Black Americans?

  • Jul 4, 2007
Pros: Kimberly Elise turned in a fine, gutsy performance.

Cons: The movie was shot too darkly; it is grainy.

The Bottom Line: In the final analysis Woman Thou Art Loosed is a hard movie to watch, but its message is all-American and deserves to be told.

Plot Details: This opinion reveals minor details about the movie''s plot.

Bishop T.D. (Thomas Dexter) Jakes, pastor of The Potter’s House a predominately Black American non-denominational mega-church in Dallas, Texas. His experiences dealing with the flock of his church is the basis behind the emotionally charged and dark, dark movie Woman Thou Art Loosed.

The characters are fictional, as the movie states, but the main character Michelle Jordan is a composite of real life women Jakes has come in contact with in his ministry. The movie is an adaptation of T.D. Jakes self-help novel which chronicles a woman’s struggle to come to make peace with her and her family’s legacy of sexual, physical, and emotional abuse, drug addiction and grinding poverty.

Directed by Michael Schultz (The Practice, Ally McBeal, Everwood), Woman Thou Art Loosed is a hard movie to watch. But nonetheless watch it I did. The movie opens with a murder most foul and in a church no less. The murder with the gun is Michelle portrayed by the beautiful Kimberly Elise (Beloved, John Q, Close to Home); we don’t find out who she shoots until the final frames of the movie however compelling you to watch until the end.

The movie bounces back and forth between timelines depicting different times in Michelle’s life; young Michelle, Michelle in prison being counseled by T.D. Jakes, and Michelle as a young adult just related from prison. Pay attention or you’ll soon be lost. Loretta Devine (A Different World, I Am Sam, Boston Public) portrays Cassey Jordan, Michelle’s single mother who invites an unemployed pedophile Reggie portrayed by Clifton Powell (Roc, Moesha, Ray) into her home where proceeds to rape and sexually molest 12-year old Michelle portrayed by Destiny Edmond (That’s So Raven).

After Cassey finds the young Michelle crying in her closet one night the girl tells her mother what Reggie has done to her but her mother rejects her explanation, setting off a chain of events that leads Michelle into prostitution, drug abuse, physical abuse, jail and eventually murder.

My Thoughts

Kimberly Elise turns is gutsy performance as Michelle the central character in this moving film with an almost entirely Black American cast, which also included Debi Morgan (Twana), Michael Boatman (Todd), Idalis DeLeon (Nicole), and the Bishop himself T.D. Jakes.

If I have one complaint about Woman Thou Art Loosed it has to be the way it was filmed; way too darkly for my tastes. This filming technique made the movie seem grainy and hard to watch. It also made the film seem like the movie was made in the 1960’s rather than 2004 (scratching head).

In the final analysis Woman Thou Art Loosed is a hard movie to watch, but its message is all-American and deserves to be told. It deals with a serious subject in the Black American community without the laugh-line!
