About this musician

Johann Sebastian Bach (March 31, 1685-July 28, 1750) was a German composer whose masterful works for solo instruments, voice, and orchestra are regarded as bringing the Baroque period of classical music to its maturity. Although he introduced no new styles of his own, Bach mastered and perfected existing techniques from all over Europe, primarily France and Italy.

During his lifetime, Bach was better known as an organist than as a composer. His works were considered by many peers as too old fashioned and lacking in modernity. While his works influenced many composers in the years following his death, Bach himself did not gain fame until well into the high Classical and Romantic periods of classical music.

Bach is considered by many historians and performers to be among the influential "Three B's" group of composers, with the other two being Ludwig von Beethoven and Johannes Brahms.
