Don't Kill The Messenger

To my recollection, Frank Marino had an extremely steep hill to climb - with my introduction to his work being in the form of a LIVE recording (which I generally equate to having pins stuck in my eye) and, the ancient memory of his name courtesy of a long lost college classmate, who, in between not bathing and harboring the worst musical taste in recorded history (Loverboy, Molly Hatchet, The Outlaws etc,) would routinely double and triple down on his douche baggery by continuously wearing a flea-bitten Marino concert tee - not the kind of positive reinforcement that would send me running off to sample his work.

Well, after getting an earful of Marino's Real Live, I believe that I owe my erstwhile classmate an apology (if I knew what rock to look under.) Real Live is just about the purest live recording in recent memory, jammed with some of the most ferocious, articulate and inspired guitar that I have ever experienced.

Every single track on this two CD set is testament to a prodigious talent at work. Only a pure idiot (or genius) would lead off with two covers of Hendrix in the first four tracks (Voodoo Chile, Red House.) Marino's mastery and transcendence of Jimi still has me reeling - as the entire record is high mass for a guitar child of a lesser god. Yes, let's continue to genuflect before Page, Beck, Clapton and Hendrix but we should, at the very least, save the final bow for possibly the least known but most worthy - Frank Marino!

Spectacular and essential!
