A Broken LCD screen is not the end of the world!

So a few months ago, I dropped my iPhone 3g. Not once, not twice, but thrice. The first time there was a small crack on the LCD screen. The second time, the crack became larger. The third time, there was a big grey spot on the bottom right hand of the screen which kept me from seeing anything on that part of the phone. It was frustrating and I wasn't willing to spend 100+ on repairs so I went to youtube after buying a replacement LCD screen on ebay. This video was extremely helpful and helped me fix my phone:

The only thing that the video didn't explain was that there are a few parts that are taped over some of the screws and it also doesn't show the process of taking the old LCD screen off of the metal mount, but I just used the tool to pry it off. It was extremely simple.

Here's some of the steps I went through:

1. I used the suction cup from the tool kit that came with the LCD screen to pull off the screen after
unscrewing the top and bottom parts.

2. I unhooked the belts from the board. #3 was definitely difficult.

3. Here's the damaged LCD Screen:

4. Here's the fixed phone with the new LCD screen!

Cost of replacement Screen: $25
Time spent to replace screen: Less than 1 hour

So I definitely recommend a DIY approach to fixing an iPhone LCD screen. I can't recall ever fixing anything else myself so I feel like if I can do it, than anyone can do it. My only recommendation would be to buy an OEM LCD screen. The ones available for 25 dollars are not as bright and do not take up the entire screen. There is a very small space around the edges that the LCD screen does not fill up (it's hardly noticeable). But other than that, I say, DIY, save money!

This is AWESOME! Thanks so much for sharing this...I would've easily been one of those suckers that spent the $100+, not even thinking of DIYing it!

Great to know! Thanks so much for sharing. I take really great care of my iPhone, but I have several friends who are constantly breaking theirs. A couple to the point where they've stopped fixing it and have this perpetual spider web on their screen. I'll definitely have to send this to them!

Thanks for reading =) But yea, I try to take care of mine and I finally stopped dropping it when pulling my bag out of my gym locker. I have a feeling I might drop it again but at least now I know what to do =P I think everyone should take the DIY approach to fixing their iphones!
