This is the first ever Pern book I read, and was instantly in love.
Menolly, a gifted musician, lives in an isolated hold by the sea. When the hold's harper dies, Menolly looses her one connection to music as her father forbids her from continuing her teaching and entertaining duties within the hold.
Finding her now restrictive life unbearable, she runs away from home, only to discover that fire lizards, miniature flying dragons, are real - she finds then hatching in a cave as deadly Thread falls from the sky. She feeds them to keep them from dying outside, and inadvertently Impresses them.
This book is the first book in the Harper Hall trilogy. Pern is a wonderfully imagined place, and the book leaves the reader wanting to know more about it.
In my opinion, it's a great introduction to Pern, especially for younger readers.
