Restaurant Review
It's that time of year when people plan to vacation on the Monterey Peninsula. World class golf, gorgeous ocean vistas, the Aquarium, shopping in Carmel, the US Open, racing at Luguna Seca, Concours D'Elegance and so much more. However, if you are in need of our favorite food, it is likely that you will be disappointed..UNLESS...you find your way to Allegro Pizza, located in 'The Barnyard' in Carmel (just off of Highway 1).
Let's get right to the Pizza. Unlike typical California Pizza (thick crust, loads of cheese and toppings), Allegro will get you as close to East Coast Pizza as possible in this part of the country. They have a crust that is just above razor thin with a taste that is neither oily or yeasty. The mositure content is perfect and it is cooked to a golden brown perfection. The sauce is a slightly spiced version somewhat like having peeled tomatoes squeezed on the crust with a touch of high quality olive oil and a touch of oregano. They use three cheeses to complete the pie (not too oily or too much) and you will NOT be disappointed. For red pie lovers, they have the absolute best sausage in the area. For white pie lovers, you cannot go wrong with either the Chicken Pesto or Chicken and Ranch pies.
They have a very accomodating and hard working staff and plenty of room. If you have children, they have a 'make your own pizza' special for them. If you are out for an adult evening, the wine selection and tap beer selection will meet your approval. Lastly, their menu includes some great traditional Italian dishes...all of which will satisfy your appetite AND, as legend goes, there is ONE Customer who shows up daily (and has since it opened) and orders a Cobb Salad!
