The Good Grub Presents ... Elena's Greek

What do you mean, you don't eat no meat!?  … Oh, I love me some Greeks.  Fun music, boisterous conversation, and some straight from the heavens … GRUB.  And Elena's is no exception … from the moment you sit down, you're delighted with a tray packed with warm pita bread, a container or two of their secret-n'-sensational garlic spread, and a party of pink, pickled onions, jalapenos, garlic cloves, turnips, and cabbage.  It's really only the start of the meal, but I'd be satisfied if it ended right there.  Add to your pre-main-course festivities a plate of their super-smooth, home-made humus and now the meal is really picking up steam.  But like all the best ones, this GRUB session has only hit second gear.  Next comes a round of salad, or our personal favorite, the melt-your-belly lentil soup, packed with rich flavors and a hearty bite … now that will put some hair on your chest … wait, nevermind.  But all this has just been building to the crescendo that is the main dish.  They've got a ton of different options to choose from and each comes in a plate or pita sandwich variety.  We always go with the plate which is loaded up with rice, a grilled tomato and giant Anaheim pepper, chopped onions and fresh cilantro, and the real reason for the euphoria you'll get from one meal at Elena's … the meat.  We try to mix it up, but our favorites always come down to their "you've-never-had-it-this-juicy" chicken, the crazy-flavorful lamb, and the hearty-meaty-delight known simply as "shish."  Today we went with the 1/2 lamb,  1/2 shish double duty and boy were we glad that we did.   We love the plate because it allows your to make your own super-packed mini-pita-sandwiches … start with a layer of humus, some veggies, a sprinkling of the pickled-surprise, a slice of shish and a layer of lamb, and then repeat the combo all over again.  It's kind of like one of those jars you made as a little kid with different layers of colored sand … but way more delicious.   But hey, if you're looking for a little more veggie action … or just a mouthful of tasty … the felafel is a pretty unreal selection.  This isn't your pre-formed balls of dried-out-mush … this is your fist-sized, wildly-smacked-together garbanzo bean mixture, which gets deep fried to a beautiful crunch, and then smothered in humus.  Just promise that whatever you get, you'll remember to breath as you stuff yourself silly with all the mouth-watering food.  Or don't … whatever.  Just remember that we warned you, because seriously, we've had some pretty Good GRUB … but at Elena's, it's starting to get a little ridiculous.
