Spaghetti Has Never Tasted This Good

A Japanese spaghetti restaurant almost seems like an oxymoron.  But somehow these two things really do go together, at least at the Spoon House Bakery & Restaurant.  Located in the traditionally nisei part of Gardena, Spoon House offers a unique blend of cuisines that, given half a chance, is sure to become a favorite.

Before covering the Japanese part of the dishes, I should discuss the style of the spaghetti itself.  Spoon House prepares the pasta al dente style (literally "to the teeth"), which means the noodles are cooked firmer than you may be used to from an Italian restaurant.  In addition, if you are somewhat intimidated by the concept of Japanese spaghetti, the menu offers traditional Italian recipes as well.

The Japanese recipes are quite diverse and run the gamut from mild to adventurous.  To get your feet wet, you might want to try Tuna & Onion or Fresh Tomato & Shiso.  For something a little different, consider Japanese Style Mixed Mushroom, Hot Garlic, or Tuna, Daikon, & Lemon Soy Sauce.  If you are feeling exotic, give the Natto & Shiso or Mushroom & Sea Urchin a try.  They have 36 recipes on the menu and each one has its own unique flavor.  You could eat hear every day of the month and not have the same dish twice.  Spoon House also bakes their own fresh bread, which can be purchased for take home as well.  Finally, they have a "one dollar" salad (really only $1) which has a great Japanese style dressing that can't be missed.  Don't eat here without ordering the salad.

I've never heard of a Japanese spaghetti restaurant, how cool! I'm definitely going to have to try this next time I'm in LA- great pics, too by the way!

SB- Santa Barbara or SB- South Bay LA, because this place is located in South Bay LA, Gardena. I'm right there with you, I'll be in LA in July, and I might have to make a special trip to this place! It sounds like something you just have to try!

The natto and shiso, and the mushroom and uni ones sound so good! Never heard of a Japanese spaghetti house before, but now I want to go to one. There goes everyone's low carb diet :P
