Did you know the early Christians didn’t even celebrate Christmas? Going back to our Christian roots might make some surprising differences to seasonal and social celebrations, but author E. G. Lewis wisely sidesteps the whole “war against Christmas” debate by reminding his readers to concentrate on themselves and their own homes, not what they neighbors are doing. He then proceeds to offer a wealth of material including well-researched history, social customs, scriptural and symbolic meanings, even recipes and more, to challenge and inform his readers in the season of Advent. Why was there a census in Judea? Which “inn” had no room? Who were the shepherds? And who invented the crèches we use to celebrate the Christmas season? Thoughtful, thought-provoking, informative and fun, All Things Christmas is a thoroughly enjoyable Advent book that I’ll plan to read again when Advent returns.
