Great concealer! For a stick of chalk. Not so great for real skin.
Nov 10, 2009
Pros: SPF 15, not too expensive
Cons: Looks chalky, doesn't conceal well, seeps into fine lines, doesn't match my skin tone
The Bottom Line: Almay Smart Shade Concealer in Light/Medium looks like a light beige chalk shade. It doesn't conceal well, doesn't look good, and accentuates fine lines.
I want to preface this review by saying that this is a review of Almay Smart Shade CONCEALER in Light/Medium. The size, .37 ounce, and the container both prove that and this listing was under Almay concealers.
Having said that, Almay and I never really got along so I'm not surprised that I didn't like this concealer. I really don't feel that it changes to match my skin color. It looks like chalk and is very obvious under my eyes.

This concealer comes in a .37 ounce plastic tube and is carded. The shades you can choose from are light, light/medium, and medium. There are no deeper shades, much like their Smart Shade makeup. The concealer starts out as a white cream but quickly changes color on the skin. I don't smell much of a scent and it is easy to apply but my praise stops there.
I know I need a fairly heavy concealer for my dark circles but I have been trying to lighten up as far as thick concealers and find lighter weight ones that can still do the job. I picked up Almay Smart Shade Concealer Light/Medium and the coordinating foundation because they were buy one get one free. I was skeptical but I am a cosmetics junkie. We put our hesitations aside when faced with BOGOs.
At home, I tried the concealer on freshly washed, lightly moisturized skin. Indeed, the concealer came out white much like a light lotion or cream. I dotted around and under my eyes and it immediately started to change color. That was fun to watch, I guess, but the color stopped at a light beige chalk shade.
I blended it well and put on the rest of my make up but the concealer looked awful. It wasn't just the shade. It was the consistency. It not only looked chalky colored, it looked chalky on the skin. For a lightweight concealer, it looked much heavier than it was. It sunk into my fine lines and looked dry and very unflattering.
I tried to fix that by applying a different liquid concealer over it but that just added to the mess. I had to finally wash my face and start all over again. I did NOT like that!
I did give Almay Smart Shade Concealer another chance and got the same results. Wondering if I should have gone with medium instead of light/medium, I went so far as to take the concealer back to Rite Aid and switch it for the medium shade.
The results? Almost identical. I got the same chalky texture and just a hint of darker beige chalky color. The shade is NOT smart at all. I tried it on the back of my hand and it didn't blend and I tried it on the lighter skin on my wrist and it looked chalky and dry.
It did wash off easily and I did not experience any eye issues when I used the product but I certainly didn't like the way it looked on me.
It may have concealed my dark circles a little but then I wanted to conceal the concealer! It drew attention to my under eye area, the last place I want people looking at when they look at me. I know I have chronic shadows and would like people to see my eyes and my skin rather than the shadows. Almay Smart Shade Concealer basically was a billboard for people to know I was trying to cover something up - and failing.
Buying Info Almay Smart Shade Concealer Light/Medium and the other shades can be found at drugstores and mass-market stores on and offline. The price is around $7.00 - $8.00 for a tube, I believe. It's not pricey really but it's not worth the price either.
I tell ya, sometimes I just won't give up on a brand. I have a rare few Almay products that I like and boy, this sure isn't one of them. I really don't buy into the whole smart shade hype but I have other products that do a better job matching my skin tone although none are concealers. I will never use a concealer that I don't personally choose the shade of again.
I am completely unimpressed with Almay Smart Shade Concealer. 2 stars. And I am being really generous!
