This is one of the best DVD collections I've seen. The movies are, of course, wonderful but it's the packaging & bonus material that makes this such a great set. I originally purchased the first volume, which contained 5 movies. When the second volume came out, along with the complete collection, Amazon gave customers the option to purchase the complete set minus the first 5 DVDs for those who had already purchased volume 1(it still came with the DVD cases because these are the thin cases & the first volume set came in standard DVD cases).
I won't go into detail about the movies because this is a review for the set. I will just say that they are all very enjoyable. Fred & Ginger had such amazing chemistry. She is definitely my favorite of his dancing partmers. Their singing & dancing are spectacular & I just LOVE her costumes.
The set includes all 10 of their movies: 1. Flying Down to Rio 2. The Gay Divorcee 3. Roberta 4. Top Hat 5. Follow The Fleet 6. Swing Time 7. Shall We Dance 8. Carefree 9. The Story of Vernon and Irene Castle 10. The Barkleys of Broadway
It also features the fascinating documentary, Astaire and Rogers Partners in Rhythm. (An interesting fact: They did not cut their dancing scenes, so they often had to repeat each routine over & over until they got it perfect. Once, Ginger actually danced until her feet were bloody, without even complaining. I doubt any actresses, today, have that much dedication.)
One of my favorite parts of the collection is the bonus audio CD, Timeless Songs from the Original Movie Soundtracks. I've always wanted to be able to listen to these songs as Fred & Ginger did them. The only downside is that you also get some of the dialogue from the movie in with the song because they were not recorded outside of the film studio. 1. Night and Day (from The Gay Divorcee) 2. The Continental (from The Gay Divorcee) 3. Top Hat, White Tie and Tails (from Top Hat) 4. Cheek to Cheek (From Top Hat) 5. I'm Putting All My Eggs in One Basket (from Follow The Fleet) 6. Let's Face the Music and Dance (from Follow The Fleet) 7. Pick Yourself Up (from Swing Time) 8. The Way You Look Tonight (from Swing Time) 9. Let's Call The Whole Thing Off (from Shall We Dance) 10. They Can't Take That Away From Me (from The Barkleys of Broadway)
You also get two nice little folders full of bonus material. The first one is a campaign book for Shall We Dance. It includes extracts from the press, biographies, pictures from the movie, pictures of the movie posters, & more. The second folder contains the campaign book for Roberta & some great glossy, black & white, 5x7 photographs of various scenes in their movies (10 pictures in all).
All of this comes packaged very nicely in an attractive glossy box. Like I said, the DVDs are in thin cases & the little folders are the same size.
In addition to all that, they had an offer to send away for free movie posters. I'm not sure if the offer is still available but I just had to include a copy of my receipt & a UPC code when I sent away for it. I received 4 large posters for the movies Top Hat, Swing Time, Shall We Dance, & Follow the Fleet. I don't really have any place to put them, right now, but maybe someday I'll have a bigger house.
This is an awesome collection for anyone who loves classic movies. Great job, Warner Brothers!
