Blu-ray Revolutionizes the HD Video Era With Its Brilliant Sound and Picture!

Though Blu-ray may be just a bit expensive right now, it is definitely the superior format out there today.  While digital downloads are restricted to your computer as of right now, Blu-ray has no such restrictions.  Whether you want to play movies on your computer, BD player or your Playstation 3, Blu-ray allows this.  The format also offers superior sound quality and is always presented in full HD 1080p.  While most nay-sayers are of the belief that we are truly in the digital age and that the format is going to fade away like beta, there are the few of us Blu-ray users who know that there is just something comforting about taking a disc out of its case and popping it in your player.

A lot of people don't think that there is much difference between the HD quality picture of Blu-ray and that of DVD.  While I obviously can't stream a Blu-ray movie, I can show you pictures.  These are taken from what many folks say is the Blu-ray carbon, Casino Royale.  The top picture is from the DVD and the bottom is from the Blu-ray.  In these pictures, you can notice that color has been better transfered as well as all the little details on the palace.  With the much larger storage capacity (as of right now 50GB) on the discs, you are getting a virtually lossless copy of the original film.  On top of this, you are getting lossless audio which is now presented in Dolby Digital 7.1 Surround sound.  Sure, some older titles don't transfer as well as others, but if you are buying a new film on Blu-ray, have a decent television and sound system, it's like being at the movies.  Let's not forget about awesome special features like picture in picture documentaries.

Like I said above, Blu-ray's are still pretty expensive right now, but if you buy them from Amazon.com, you can usually get them for about ten dollars more than the DVD.  In my opinion, it's completely worth the price as you are getting movie theater quality video and sound on Blu-ray.  If you don't have a Blu-ray player, make the switch.  They players themselves are cheaper now.  If you're a gamer (and even if you're not) the PS3 is the best bargain.  You're getting a game console, a DVD player and a Blu-ray player all for $400 bucks, can't beat that.  Say what you will about how digital media is the future, I like being able to stick a movie in a player any day of the week.  Plus, most Blu-ray's now come with a digital copy of the film!  5/5!

I'm not sure really. I know there are some movies that look very good on Blu-Ray but so far, they have very little difference when I play a great dvd movie on an excellent HD-upcoverting player. Also, sometimes movies filmed in the 70's-80's sometimes look worst on BR (Halloween for example). I am not saying that they can't look better but studios are being lazy in remastering them. The first "Fifth Element" BR release looked just like the Superbit.  Blu does look good but the difference to me is minimal as long as you maximize the capability of the up-converting player by calibrating it with Avia or THX optimizer. Compared The Superman returns and Ultraviolet dvds and Blu-rays with barely any difference.  I think it has no set standards yet, which is why the releases are uneven and some directors still use standard cameras as opposed to HD cameras.
great write up anyway! Blu-Ray is overrated in my book.

I can definitely tell the difference between the sharpness of those screen shots.  If I were a DVD, I'd be shivering in my boots cuz it sounds like I'm going to be extinct soon!

Burr, it's cold in those DVD boots!
