Blu-ray Disc (which is also know as BD and Blu-ray) is a type of optical disc storage that has surpassed the storage capacity of DVD. Blu-ray is mainly used for gaming on the Playstation 3 console, for viewing BD movies and for mass data storage. Each Blu-ray disc hold up to 50 GB's of storage.
Blu-ray is called Blu-ray because of the blue/violet lasers that are used to read the discs instead of red. This is partly what allows Blu-ray to hold so much information as the blue laser used a shorter wavelength to read the disc.
In early 2008, Blu-ray won the format war against HD DVD by Toshiba. Though many film studios decided to only release their films exclusively on one brand or the other, Blu-ray won out. As of June 2009, there are over 2500 Blu-ray discs available for purchase.
Though Blu-ray may be just a bit expensive right now, it is definitely the superior format out there today. While digital downloads are restricted to your computer as of right now, Blu-ray has no such restrictions.
