Cafe Diem is in a word funky. It's also fun and a great place to meet friends for casual drinks and desserts. Situated right around the corner from Virginia Highlands, it's convenient for quick drop ins.
The crowd here is hip and eclectic. The prices are a little high but I chalked it up to ambiance. There are always folks playing board games, checkers, chess, reading and of course drinking coffee. As for full fledged meals, I've never tried one. It's more of a coffee, desert bar that caters to beats and hipsters of all ages.
There are ocassional poetry readings and jazz bands but it still retains that neighborhood charm that is so appealing. For a quick bite out on the town or for lively conversation and drinks, Cafe Diem is the place. Not for children.
