a question by Nov 10, 2010
I asked a friend this question once and immediately realized that it polarized people, but I'm curious as to what the prevailing popular opinion is, so I'm asking it anyway. Who is more important in the world of comics... the writer or the artist?

I would say the writer. It's the writer who puts the story together and needs to have continuity, knows the characters and their personality, etc. Peter David's run on Hulk is one example. Stan Lee's scripts on the Fantastic Four and Spider-man runs are legendary. Even so, the artist is also vital. Without the proper strips colored and drawn properly, even a kick-ass script can suffer from lackluster art. Ditko was a great artist who could make the most mundane science fiction comic book strip (from the 1950s anyway) seem interesting and exciting. Same with Frank Miller and Gene Colan, both extraordinary artists. So I guess you're right. There is no wrong answer. They're both vital.

It is an interesting question. I've seen some pretty heated discussions as to who is right or who is wrong.

I don't think it is a question that can be answered with a correct answer. I mean that no one would be right or wrong on their answer. Both writer and artist are a team. A comic book could not survive one without the other. It's like a river with no water. With no water, it's not a river.

Well they are often the same Person like Herge or Carl Barks who are two Masters of the Genre but then you also have artists who really shine with a certain writers and not others so I do not think there is any clear cut anwer to this one.

Hmmm.....since comics is an art based medium, I would say art can carry a title even though the story may be lacking. Proof of this was recently shown in the early 2000's Dan Jurgens run on THOR with John Romita Jr. as artist. Although the names Azzarello, Miller, Claremont, Smith and Moore can easily carry a title, I think art has a lot to do with a comic's sales and popularity. Example: Metabarons.

The more proper question is: Which is more important to the success of a comic, the artwork or the dialog? My answer to this question is that in most cases it is the artwork, for it is possible for superior artwork to overcome inferior dialog but it is extremely difficult for superior dialog to uplife inferior artwork.
