MY DAUGHTER HAS BECOME THE HAIR GREMLIN!: Conair Hair Jeweler Quick Gems
Feb 18, 2008
Pros: easy to use, looks nice, runs well, small
Cons: no storage bag for extra jewels, takes 2 AAA batteries
The Bottom Line: This was a gift worth waiting years for. What a wonderful gadget for anyone who loves to experiment with hairstyles.
I sit here writing in my computer chair with my hair in wisps covered with glittering gems.
In fact, I have so many gems in my hair that they clack if I turn my head just right.
Yes, this is true.
My 9 year old aspiring hair stylist has been pouncing upon me to do my hair every time I sit in my chair at the computer.
In fact, at times, I have to stifle a laugh when I see my husband walking around with a stray jewel in his hair.
Apparently, she enjoys the challenge of trying to sneak on in her dad's hair without him knowing it.
HOW DID WE END UP WITH A CONAIR QUICK GEM
My daughter has been obsessed with hair since she was three years old. At age three she confided in me that she had always wanted red hair and wanted me to change her hair for her.
I did not know that little children thought of such things.
Well, the first time that she saw the Quick Gem machine was on television. I am not sure if it was this exact model, but I think she was only about 4 years old.
She had just butchered her hair into a high fashion maniac cut that people were envious of (I kid you not), when my little 4 year old came up to me and said,
"Mama, I have to grow out my hair so I can put those jewels in it, so don't worry, I won't cut it again"
Right. As if THAT would happen.
But it did. So determined was she to have those jewels in her hair that she did not cut her hair again.
Year after year went buy and she refused to have her hair cut because she just knew that God would answer her prayers and get her the Jewel machine for her hair.
Well, He did.
After Christmas sitting in a clearance cart in CVS was a greatly reduced CONAIR QUICK GEMS machine- only $4. Even I could afford to get that for her birthday which just so HAPPENED to be coming very quickly.
WHAT IS THE CONAIR QUICK GEMS LIKE?
Do you remember those old label machines- you used to have a strip of plastic in them and you turned a dial for each letter and pressed the letter into the plastic and it came out raised and white?
Well, that is what this reminds me of.
For those of you who don't know about this machine, it is about 5 inches long with a handle. It is purple in color with sparkles on it.
There is a dial on top which goes round and round by itself , but you can rotate it clockwise if you need to replace a jewel in a slot.
There are little metal slots where the jewels sit in waiting to be applied to hair.
At the top of the machine, there is a slot where you put a thin lock of hair.
You press a button on the front of the machine and it puts a jewel in your hair and you simply lift it out and the jewel stays in.
HOW DOES THIS WORK?
Once you have placed a jewel in your hair, it is a most fascinating gadget. The jewel is a two sided jewel and there is a spring that holds it together. When the machine puts it on your hair, it draws it apart and then locks it into place on your hair strand, releasing the spring so it stays put in your hair.
To remove the jewel, you simply pull the gem sides apart gently and it releases the hair. VERY Ingenious.
This CONAIR QUICK GEM MACHINE comes with 30 jewels. Not all of them fit at one time on the machine- only 24 of them will fit at a time, and there is no storage bag for the extras. That is something you may want to make up if you plan on giving this as a present to someone.
PRICE : $25
Instructions are printed on the back of the packaging and are easy to follow. The jewels are reuseable.
Here is what the Conair site says about this machine:
# Gem cartridge rotates automatically # Jeweler attaches gems to hair in seconds # 30 reusable jewels in 3 shapes included # Add bling in seconds to your hair # Bejewel your hair automatically to all hair types # Easy on/easy off jewels
The machine takes two AAA batteries so you need to make sure you get those as well or you will have a disappointment on your hands.
The gems come in three colors and shapes- teardrop, square, oval shapes in pink, clear and blue colors. They don't glitter, but they do give a reflection similar to those tiny mirrors that are often sewed onto clothing from India.
This machine has turned our patient little girl into a hair gremlin! As soon as I sit somewhere to start doing something my head is covered in jewels in minutes.
Once she is tired of it, she takes them all out and then puts them on herself. She puts them on her dolls, and then on her hairstyling BARBIE head that she practices hair styling on for the future.
I am very surprised at how wonderfully this works. The jewels really do look nice in the hair- a lot better than I expected. It is smooth in operation and the jewels do stay in the hair without moving unless you want them to.
This is an excellent present for anyone who might enjoy doing this for fun or special occasions. The jewels might look a little young for some people, but I actually like them, which I did not expect.
