The D-Link Wireless AC1000 Dual-Band cloud router, made in China, is designed for modern device heavy homes. The package contains the D-Link DIR-820L wireless AC1000 dual-band cloud gigabyte router, Ethernet cable, power adapter, and the quick install guide. Zero configuration enabling makes setting up your network a cinch. Web access, a free smart phone app, or a paid tablet app allows monitoring from anywhere, plus a second free app provides remote access to files on a connected storage device. This router takes advantage of newer IEEE 802.11ac networking standards which greatly improves upon 802.11n requirements and is expected to be commonly used by 2015.
Set up was simple, but required two attempts. I started by hooking up all the cables and powering on the router. Then I attempted to configure the router using the QRS mobile app. I could go through the setup wizard, rename network bands, assign passwords, and such. However once I sent the changes to the router, and rebooted, the changes didn't go into effect. After a couple attempts, I switched to following the simple instructions found in the box for setup on the PC. For those interested in altering the advanced settings, the PC method is the option to use. Set up of the router was quick; it took more time to connect all our wireless devices to the new wireless network.
Using the free MyDLink Lite or the MyDLink+ apps, one can monitor connected cloud enabled D-Link devices, set alerts, and make basic changes. The free SharePort app provides access to your documents, photos, and tunes from anywhere with a Wi-Fi connection as long as the files are found on an external hard drive connected to the router. Adding these functions comes with a security risk. You can add cameras to monitor areas of your home, but also open the possibility of your network being hacked or someone inappropriately opening the app on your device and having access. Unless you intend to make heavy use of these features, it would be safer to avoid these features.
The range is good, and typical from what we normally experience. The addition of cloud enabled surveillance cameras can act as repeaters and increase signal strength and range. We have experienced strong and consistent signals through a variety of uses and devices.
Like everything computer related, how we utilize the internet, wireless networking equipment, and standards commonly change. Wireless-N has become the common choice, but will be replaced by the new Wireless-AC standard. For those who are running into bandwidth issues or are looking to purchase a new wireless router, moving to Wireless-AC should seriously be considered. If you're looking for a simple to install, expandable networking solution with app enabled cloud access, the D-Link Wireless AC1000 Dual-Band cloud router is worthy of your consideration.
PROS: Consistent and well balanced signals Simple to install and maintain Cloud enabled features 1 year limited warranty
