Trouble and secrets in Sweden

  • May 28, 2013
This extremely well-written book is the first, I understand, in a series which is going to feature a gentleman named Sebastian Bergman, who at one time was a top police psychologist and college lecturer, but who left all of that behind when he lost his wife and young daughter to a tsunami. It crushed his spirit, and he was completely uninterested in what was going on around him, or anything else for that matter. His sole consolation was attracting women to him to satisfy his urges.

When Sebastian learns that his estranged mother has died, he returns to his boyhood hometown to sell her house and leave as soon as possible. At that time, however, a gruesome murder is committed in that town and the national murder investigating squad include Bergman, somewhat against their collective will, to help in the investigation. Bergman appears to be doing his best to irritate the other team members, and they wish he would be taken out of the group. He comes up with some very helpful ideas, however, and thus is obliged to stay. Other deaths occur and the mystery of why deepens. There are suspects who come and go, and the reader can get a headache trying to figure out who did what, which is exactly what the author intended.

The case is finally solved, and Bergman is on his own again, with a mission to discover a person he knew many years in his past (to say more would spoil the plot). Whether he succeeds or not, I hope that he will be back soon in another case.
