Desert Essence Blemish Touch Stick ~ My Hero

Pros: Works great!

Cons: Scent can sometimes be a bit strong

The Bottom Line: Just one of those products you wonder where it has been all your life.

After reading about all sorts of green products and the like in Renee Loux's Easy Green Living, I'd decided to go green with all sorts of goodies, from cleaning products to my latex pillow (which rules the universe, by the way) to skin care items.

For the longest time, I'd used Clearasil vanishing cream for pesky blemishes, but half the time it didn't seem to work or it just took forever to make any sort of difference.  It actually tends to work better as a preventative measure, but should one big blemish show up on my face one day, it's basically going to be there for a while.

Not anymore.

I did a lot of research on blemish products before narrowing it down to two brands: Desert Essence and Burt's Bees.  In terms of reviews, Desert Essence fared better.  The ingredients were slightly different, and I also continued to have a nagging feeling that Burt's Bees would be...not right for me.  And after dealing with their lotion and other things, I'm glad I went with my instincts.  However, it wasn't until I moved to Missouri that I lived near a store that sold Desert Essence (some green goods can be hard to find!).

Ok, so a 0.31 fl. oz. container of this stuff was around $7ish dollars, but holy cow was it worth it.  This stuff totally blew my old blemish junk right out of the water.  The product itself is actually a liquid and comes in one of those little roll-on containers like some lip glosses do.  All you have to do is roll on a bit over whatever blemish you might have 5-6 times a day.  I know, it sounds like a lot but it isn't, and trust me, it's totally worth it.  If you do exactly what the directions say, you'll see a difference within a day at least.  I've had a few unhappy red spots on my face (the beginnings of really awful zits...bleh), but after applying this stuff - and sometimes not even by the directions - within maybe two days they were seriously diminished or just gone.

I think the main ingredient that does this is the tea tree oil.  Desert Essence took a bunch of natural extracts and essential oils, put them together, and made this little beauty.  From witch hazel to rosemary, they have all sorts of great ingredients in here that really can do what they claim.  Certain ingredients are meant to tackle the blemish while others calm skin down or keep it from drying out.  And that's one thing I really like about this stuff.  While the Clearasil junk would kill my skin if I used it too often (and too often for me would be maybe once a day for a few days in a row), this didn't.  It's non-oily and non-drying.  Yay and yay.

Even better, this isn't just for blemishes.  You can use it on insect bites and other skin irritations.  I haven't done so yet, but summer is coming up so I'm definitely going to try it.**  There is no animal testing with this product (raw materials or the finished product), and there are no synthetic ingredients, which I think is cool.

This stuff is so great, I would use it even on tiny blemishes to the point where I'm about 2/3 empty.  So because it's expensive, I've finally decided that only when I seriously need to use this stuff will I do so.  That way it lasts longer.  But man, it is awesome.  It's one of those things that I can't believe isn't more popular.

Oh!  Right, almost forgot.  Tea tree oil does have a pretty strong scent, and that's one of the things people tend to fuss about the most.  Frankly, when I first smelled it I thought, "It's not that bad."  It seems like it gets stronger every time you use it though, haha.  Even so, I could not care less.  The scent doesn't last forever and I've never had any of my family members asking, "What's that smell?" or anything even right after I've put it on.  I'm fine with it.  And you know what?  Even if I didn't like it, I'd still use this stuff because it works so well.

**I did use it on bug bites and it totally rules the universe in that department as well.
