So I recently began using the Elgato Eye TV on my Mac since I don't have DVR service. I'm currently with DirecTV and I wasn't willing to spend the monthly fee on their DVR service so I looked for other options. I heard about the Elgato EyeTV and decided to try it out and I'm glad that I did. It's extremely easy to use and accommodates all types of connections, antennae, S-Video etc. I didn't have a splitter for my receiver so I used the S-Video connector and it worked perfectly and I had television on my Macbook!
Also, using S-Video kept me from being able to use the channel guide so based on a recommendation online, I found out about Titantv.com that has listings for every show based on your provider. I used that information to schedule recordings manually. They come out in 2-3 gig files for a 1 hour show but the quality is excellent!
Also, I was able to get some HD channels when I connected the RF to the TV out and of course the picture quality was outstanding.
So I definitely recommend using the EyeTV. It's a great alternative to paying for DVR service and it's even possible to watch television on your mobile phone using the corresponding iPhone app for EyeTV!
