Ideal For Cooking: A Jarrow Formulas Certified Organic Coconut Oil Review
Apr 5, 2013
Talking to Buck Angel and his wife, they swear by coconut oil, often adding a tablespoon to a protein shake. After the conversations related to the benefits of using coconut oil, I thought I would give it a chance.
Jarrow Formulas organic coconut oil, a product of the Philippines, is expeller pressed from the dried flesh of the coconut palm fruit, and does not utilize any solvents in the manufacturing process. Coconut oil is a source of medium chain triglycerides such as lauric acid and caprylic acid. Because the melting point in 75-76 degrees Fahrenheit can be used in both liquid and solid forms. This jar contains approximately 32 1 tablespoon servings and adds 126 fat calories per serving. This product is promoted as being ideal for cooking, having a neutral flavor/taste, and suitable for vegans.
My first attempt to use the coconut oil was as a partial replacement for butter in my cheesy rice. This side dish is similar to a quick macaroni and cheese, but uses rice instead of pasta and is seasoned with a little garlic. I could tell the consistency of the finished product was a little oily and had a glossy appearance. However the sauce didn't break, there was no unusual flavoring, and my other half mentioned it was good even though he didn't know I added coconut oil.
Once opened, Jarrow Formulas's recommends refrigeration to maintain maximum freshness. This creates a hard block of coconut oil which can be challenging to scoop out. Taking the jar out of the refrigerator a little early helps reduce this issue, and at worst case the top can generally be scraped with ease.
While I don't really get the whole coconut oil attraction, some people really believe in its properties. For weight trainers and endurance athletes, it will certainly help increase caloric intake in a healthy manner to meet their needs. I can't say one way or the other if this product is preferable for use by the typical couch potato. However if you're looking for a flavor/taste free organic coconut oil, the Jarrow Formulas organic coconut oil is worthy of your consideration.
PROS: Neutral taste and flavor Suitable for vegans Expeller-pressed from the dried flesh of the coconut palm fruit
CONS: The coconut oil gets hard from refrigerating
