Good product for dogs that overheat easily.

I have a 15-pound Shih Tzu (she is not overweight, just on the large end of the breed standard). Shih Tzus, being a Brachycephalic breed, can overheat very easily due to their reduced breathing capacity and their ineffeciency at panting to cool themselves down. Therefore, keeping cool is especially important to these breeds.

Before I purchased the Cool Bed, Missy generally sprawled on the cold tile floor in the kitchen or on the hard plastic mat under my computer chair to stay cool. When I first purchased the Cool Bed, I realized quickly that I should have thought to order a sheet along with it, as it does not come with any cover. Missy would not lay on the bed by itself, either because it was TOO cool on her hairless belly or because she didn't like the feel of the plastic.

I had an extra dog bed which was just a rectangular piece of eggshell foam with a zippered cover over it. I took the cover, which has a thin fabric side and a heavier fleece side, from the foam bed (the foam was about done anyway) and put it on the Cool Bed. At first, Missy would not use the bed with the thin fabric side up, so I had to keep it fleece side up for a good while. Since we've had a horrible heat wave recently, she's finally taking to the fabric side and using the bed more overall.

I have put water in the bed twice and have had no leakage (I've had the bed just short of a year now). I assume it must take a good bit of water to get it to the "waterbed" stage because after adding water twice, the bed is still only about 1/2" thick and still feels pretty firm and not "floaty."

There has been a time or two when *I* was feeling overwhelmed from the heat and *I* laid across the Cool Bed...and boy, I felt better really quickly! :)

If you find your dog laying on tile/marble or vinyl/linoleum floors in the summer to stay cool, I'm betting that he or she would love to have a Cool Bed!

Note: See picture in user images at top of product page to see Missy on her Cool Bed.
