Taste is what it's all about. Our doughnuts taste, well, somewhere better than great. We also felt that the best doughnut deserves the best coffee so that's why Krispy Kreme Coffee Company came up with America's Cup of Coffee.
Pros: Fresh donuts, great taste, inexpensive, free samples, large assortment
Cons: WAY high in calories and fat, ADDICTIVE!!! Lousy coffee
The Bottom Line: Dare I say it? I dare! It's better than Dunkin Donuts!!!
I'm from New York, the land of donuts and coffee. A typical Saturday "breakfast" in my household when I lived on Long Island consisted of Dunkin Donuts and coffee. My favorite? Boston Creme.
You could imagine my dismay when I moved to California and found out that Dunkin Donuts doesn't exist out here! When my good friend, Tryg. , came out to visit and saw Krispy Kreme, he told me that we had to go there for donuts and coffee. Trusting his taste, I agreed.
I have not been to any other donut shop in California since.
Every Krispy Kreme is the same. You get to watch through a big glass panel how the donuts are made. The best time to go is when the "hot" light is on. That way, you'll not only see the donuts being made, but will also get a free sample-- A full-sized donut hot off of the conveyor belt. YUMMY!
The selection is amazing: Boston Creme, Raspberry, Strawberry, Apple Cinnamon, Old Fashioned, Old Fashioned Chocolate, Chocolate Dipped, Lemon, Sour Cream, Blueberry, Original Glazed... you get the idea. The Original glazed is my absolute favorite, replacing my long-time favorite Boston Creme. They even have a Donut of the Month, which changes every month. This month was Malted Creme, which was a little too sweet for me.
The donuts are so good that they're addictive. They must have nicotene or something in the ingredients. I just can't stop eating them!! You'll find the same from everyone that enjoys donuts. A dozen glazed doesn't last three days in my house.
The donuts are so incredibly fattening, too. There's no way around it, regardless of what type of donuts you enjoy. One Krispy Kreme donut has the same calories as a Double Whopper from Burger King. Painful.
But, oh, so good.
The staff is always friendly and ready to help. The drive thru is the fastest drive thru in history. Seriously, it must have taken me 35 seconds from ordering to paying on my last trip. They take extra special care of the children that come in, giving them Krispy Kreme hats and a donut of their choice. Apparently, Krispy Kreme has terrific field trips and fundraisers as well.
The coffee is terrible. Maybe it was the two different cups I had on two different occasions, but it was just gross. Dunkin Donuts still is the best in that department.
If you've never had Krispy Kreme, I strongly suggest you try one. You'll never be the same. Oh, and be sure to invest in elastic waistbands.
