LODGE CAST IRON PRO GRID IRON GRIDDLE: A Guy Magnet?
Oct 30, 2001
Pros: larger area cooks more at a time, variety of uses, easy to clean
Cons: must keep oiled
The Bottom Line: Tends to be a favorite among men, this pan is very versatile and useful. From pancakes to burgers, pizza to cookies, it is a favorite.
It is all over television.
Each ad says that they are geared toward the "ignorant" male who obsesses themselves with looking at every female body that looks just like the other female bodies who work out, pump themselves with silicone and have their photos retouched to the point of non-recognition to their actual personna.
For some men reduced to living by following the crowd and not being true to reality, that might be true. However, there is a very important part of the male gender that is highly ignored.
The cast iron griddle crowd.
Yes, you heard me correctly. I said cast iron griddles.
If they want to sell anything, try having a man in the background cooking up something delicious on a cast iron griddle. I bet it would sell just as much as the pseudo-women that are overused now.
WHAT ON EARTH DO I MEAN?
The first time that this very bizarre truth was presented to me, I was visiting a very nice couples' home. We were talking about different things, and the conversation was polite and interesting.
However, when I approached the long black flat thing on the wall, and inquired about it, the reaction I received was anything but what I expected.
The passion suddenly flared. The light in the eyes. The animation level heightened so much that I thought I had stepped into another home.
Apparently I had hit upon a hot button in this home. The cast iron griddle.
The reaction I got of passion and delight in this piece of cookware was not from the wife, however, it was from the husband. He accounted to me with great relish all of the benefits and advantages of using this griddle.
His wife just looked at me shrugging. She told me that it was his favorite thing to use and that she could never quite get the hang of it.
I was rather put off by this. I did not meet any men that got excited about cookware before- unless they were professional chefs, perhaps.
THE GUY MAGNET
As time has gone on over the years, the large group of closet cast iron griddle users has been coming to light. It does not seem to fit any specific income level, type of man, or area of the country.
You can find them almost anywhere. Even some very pristine homes with only the finest aluminum (yech) cookware could have a cast iron griddle hidden somewhere in the storage area, waiting for a visit from the man of the house.
My husband heads for the hallway to retrieve this amazing pan every Saturday without fail (when he is able to) and embarks on anything from a hash brown adventure to blueberry pancakes.
His very dour mood has been known to brighten considerably when using this rather unusual pan. He can go from grumpy to happy in moments just from the use of this pan.
WHAT IS THIS PAN LIKE?
The LODGE PRO GRID IRON GRIDDLE is a larger griddle than most of the two burner griddles. This is referred to a more "professional size".
The dimensions are 20"x 10 7/16"x 7/8" thick.
The weight is 15lbs.
The griddle is reversible. One side is flat with large grease gutters for better drainage. The other side has horizontal ridges for grilling meat or other things that you want to just touch the ridges of the pan while draining off fat or marinade sauces.
There is a nice slope on either side so that the juices and grease with run into the gutter, making the grilled item less greasy and more delicious.
You can use this pan on two burners of either gas or electric stove. You can take it camping with you. You can also use it under the broiler.
The price is anywhere from $43-$45. You may be able to find a discount at some places if you are fortunate.
YOU NEED TO KNOW THIS HOW TO SEASON THIS PAN
Contrary to what this site has listed and what others have said who have reviewed LODGE CAST IRON COOKWARE, none of the bakeware or cookware that LODGE makes is steel. It is all CAST IRON!!!
1. Wash with hot soapy water to remove the manufacturing wax coating.
2. Oil the cookware with solid vegetable shortening (the ONLY thing I EVER recommend Crisco for- it is not for eating).
3. Put in oven. Some people suggest upside down, but I have done it successfully both ways.
4. Make sure you provide a pan or something to catch the extra oil that will run off.
5. Bake for an hour or two at 350 degrees F.
6. Let cool in the oven after turned off.
7. Make sure to store in a DRY place when cool.
8. Keep a light coating of oil over the pan after using it. Eventually the coating of oil will make the pan stick free.
Do NOT wash in dishwasher.
Make sure to DRY IMMEDIATELY after washing, and coat lightly with oil before storing.
If rust spots develop, scour with steel wool, rinse and re-season.
MY COMMENTS ON THIS PAN
We love this pan, although my son and husband use it almost constantly even for such things that I would not use it for, like small amounts of fried veggies or something.
It is easy to clean and keep oiled. It has a nail hole in it for hanging on a hook or nail. Mine has a small area in the handle for hanging but the model in the picture has simply the handle.
If you hang it up, make sure that you have it sufficiently oiled and that the area you hang it in is not too damp or the pan may rust.
OTHER USES FOR THIS PAN
You can: fry potatoes fry eggs fry marinated veggies fry any meat or fish fry pancakes grill sandwiches
use it camping
broil on either side for veggies or meats
make bread on it in the oven use it as a cookie sheet use it for a pizza pan
You can not beat the way that this cast iron griddle browns the food to perfection and makes a seared surface, keeping in the juices of whatever you make on it.
If you use it for cookies , bread or pizza, you heat it up in the oven at the temp you are going to use it at first, and the bottom gets brown and nice.
However, cut about 10 minutes off of baking time, and you may need to lower temperature 25 degrees. Experiment.
FOR THAT MAN IN YOUR LIFE
If you have a man in your life that might like this pan, it is a nice investment. So many men end up loving this pan and using it for their personal weekend getaway that I have given up keeping count of the ones I know.
As in my case, I love the versatility of this pan as well.
If you are dating, try bringing your date over and making something on this griddle. It may not work, but there is a good chance that he will end up liking the pan, well, almost as much as you.
Is that a good thing....?

They are a very nice country store in Alabama and ordering from their online store is an experience reminiscent of Mayberry RFD. However, they are accurate and efficient. For an experience that you will not forget, you may want to try ordering a piece or two from them.
Amount Paid (US$): $20
