A lot of folks don't realize that Luby's has take out. I sure didn't until one really unfortunate vacation when my spouse got very ill in another city. We were staying in a budget motel near downtown San Antonio and he was too ill to go out for food. Not knowing my way around and frantic for him (he ended up in the hospital a few days later) I knew that I had to fetch food for us all. The big problem is that he doesn't eat meat and I didn't think that the Burger King I could see had much for him. I walked down to the end of the ramp and across the parking lot was a Luby's and there was a sign that said "Take-Out." I knew I was in luck.
Although I'd been to Luby's with my whole bunch on several occasions, I'd never noticed the take out area to the side. I guess it wasn't pertinent. On this day, it was heaven sent. My husband is a very picky eater and being limited to vegetables can make things difficult. I got him corn, fried okra, green beans and mashed potatoes and hot rolls and was able to adequately fill him up and make him happy. Sadly the vacation was a wash, but the Luby's take out was a bright moment.
Since then, I've availed myself of this take out feature lots of times. There is a Luby's near my school, and I can get there and get a nice well balanced hot meal and back to my room in time to eat it in peace. I don't know if anyone out there knows how BAD the food at our school is, but I'm so grateful to have something else for a change. I will often get baked chicken and two veggies and a roll for around $5. I've also gotten grilled fish, and sliced roast beef with gravy. The food is well prepared, not overcooked or overseasoned which I've found to be a problem with a lot of cafeteria food.
For a dining in experience, we've gone for a family Sunday lunch. They offer bargain priced children's meals with a good selection. My picky vegetarian spouse is always pleased with the mounds of many vegetables that he gets. He's partial to the squash casserole and the macaroni and cheese. I love the fresh salads, especially the spinach salad. I've never had to carry my own laden tray to a table, there has always been a member of the serving staff waiting to carry it for me. We're always able to find adequate seating no matter how large the party. I love the little cart filled with numerous condiments, including about five varieties of tabasco sauce. Not that I use the tabasco, but I like having it available.
Servers push little carts around constantly, and our drinks are continually topped off. Nothing is wanting. It's nice to have a sit down meal with the family when everyone can indulge their individual tastes--no complaints that way! This is a nice break for a busy mom to be sure. No dishes to clean up either.
The decor, well it is modern American cafeteria. The locations are squeaky clean and tables are constantly policed. The location near our home has nice high ceilings, tall windows with nice drapes which gives the place a touch of elegance.
Overall, Luby's has been a good dining experience for me and my family, whether we eat in or get take out. I've certainly had more than my fair share of cafeteria eating, but I prefer Luby's to all others.
