So, the Fairy Princess Visited MY House, OK? : MAC MINERALIZE SKINFINISH
Nov 30, 2005
Pros: shimmer very fine, soft, lots of product, compact locks with button, nice colors
Cons: expensive, need stippling brush for best application, sell out fast,
The Bottom Line: Having used many powders-this is one of the ultimate best. If you can get the brush to use with it, it's a fabulous set. I constantly get compliments!
MAC mineralized Skinfinish
As a makeup artist and portrait artist, I am always captured by new and different media to use in my art whether it be on people, paper, or canvas.
Recently, I was told that I would be able to make a trip that would take me past a MAC makeup counter. Well, THAT was like a trip to Disney World for a child!
It was about the time that the new ROCOCO line from MAC was coming out, and I quickly scanned the previews and reviews of others who have tried the products on www.makeupalley.com.
What interested me was the descriptions of the facial powders that many talked about called MINERALIZE SKINFINISH. I was also interested in the new shadows, but that is another discussion for another day.
After making the trip that allowed me to stop at the MAC counter, I nearly ran through the store, hoping that they were not sold out yet, as many of the newer items were already sold out around the country.
When I got there, I was relieved to see that all of the products were still there. The makeup artist from MAC was so wonderful to occupy my daughter with makeovers (she is going to be a very young MAC convert, I think) while I played around with the products.
What surprised me most about this collection is that I was really enjoying the MINERALIZE SKINFINISH powders.
Along with the new powders was a new regular release brush that will later be found only in the MAC PRO stores.
HOW DID I END UP WITH THESE POWDERS
I had been storing up some store credits for quite some time just in case I was able to make a trip to the store with a MAC counter sometime in the future.
Well, now was the time to make sure that I did not lose these pieces of paper that were in such danger twice already of being thrown away by accident.
I played around with the colors and found that both of the pinkish and goldish colors looked really nice. I was unsure of the third one. I managed to purchase the first one only along with the brush to apply them.
WHAT COLORS ARE AVAILABLE?
The three colors that were introduced in this line are as follows along with my evaluation of their appearance.
PLEASUREFLUSH- a peachy pink shimmery powder (if you are a fan of the limited edition of ESTEE LAUDER BLUSH PETALS that are now very hard to get, this makes a great substitute- even nicer- more pinkish, actually, and you get much more product)
SHIMPAGNE- light tan with icy taupe shimmer that appears silver on the skin
GOLD DEPOSIT- a bronze color powder with pink/gold/bronze shimmer
All three powders have veins of gold sparkle running through them just like minerals in rocks that are mined. The texture is very soft and nice. Handling needs to be with care, these are more prone to breakage if dropped.
WHAT IS THIS POWDER LIKE?
Many have said that this is simply a highlighting powder. I have found that is true, but each color works to highlight a different area on my face.
PLEASUREFLUSH is a nice cover over blush. Adds a nice peachy pink shimmer. The shimmer in these powders is very fine compared to many other shimmer powders.
SHIMPAGNE is excellent as a highlighter on high cheek bones and center nose as well as center of forehead.
GOLD DEPOSIT is a great bronzer. If applied lightly, it works beautifully on sun kissed areas- cheeks, nose, forhead, chin.
SO CEYLON also a great bronzer with a cooler base to it. A rosy milk chocolate bronze color, this looks amazingly different on everyone. I especially like it on asian and darker skin tones, but it also works well on fair women. Best as a contouring bronzer on lighter skin, all over on darker skin.
PORCELAIN PINK is much darker in the pan than PLEASUREFLUSH. However, on the skin, it is the same exact intensity. PORCELAIN PINK is a peachier pink than Pleasureflush, even though they look the opposite in the pans. I would say that it is a bit more subtle than PLEASUREFLUSH, a feature that also surprised me.
HOW TO APPLY THIS POWDER
The one caveat of this powder is that to get the most ethereal effect, you need to have the special brush that is also on the same display. That is called the STIPPLING BRUSH #187.
It looks like the LANCOME SKUNKBRUSH, but it is more dense and works better. There are long white goat hairs and shorter synthetic black hairs.
If used lightly, the brush will disperse the powder so that light stars of shimmer appear randomly around the face. The effect is quite beautiful and light.
If used with a conventional brush, unfortunately, the effect is very dense shimmer- almost like foil. I have also used it with a kabuki brush (short handled buffing type brush) and the effect is even more shiny.
DETAILS ABOUT THE POWDER
Total powder: 10g / .35 US oz.
Case: black with clear dome in center top. Powder cake is also domed.
I eventually got all colors of this powder. Thankfully I had enough store credit to cover them all. If used with the STIPPLING BRUSH, the effect is fabulous. Whenever I wear these powders, people tell me that I look really pretty especially the GOLD DEPOSIT color.
If I could not have the brush, I probably would not enjoy using these powders as much. I suppose that a lot of working with them would help to find another way to put them on that does not look so foil like if I had to use another brush, but I really love the STIPPLING BRUSH.
These powders are bigger in size that most of the powders from MAC. The dome shape is actually a nice feature of the powders.
If I had not had store credit to purchase the powders with the brush, I probably would not have purchased them all, and without the brush probably would not have purchased any of them.
However, if you can afford it, they are beautiful powders and the brush makes a wonderful application tool.
UPDATE- 1 Year later I am still using these products constantly. They are excellent to blend away slight skin blemishes. They also give a beautiful glow to the skin and I constantly have people rave about my skin and how amazingly glowy and alive I look when I wear them.
One word of caution, make sure that your face is not damp or tacky from lotion when you apply these. They will deposit a little more thickly on the skin and cause it to be a little too shimmery for day wear. I learned that the hard way and was shocked when passing a mirror in a store and seeing how crazy I looked!
MAC is planning a re-release of these skinfinishes in certain colors, so keep your eyes out for them. They are one of the best products that MAC has come out with.
YET ANOTHER UPDATE 11-30-05 MAC releases these skinfinishes from time to time and they are worth whatever you have to do to get them (make sure you have the #187 brush, however, it is essential). Skinfinsh is one product that I NEVER want to be without.
It literally has changed my makeup life completely for the better.
