WAIT! THOSE AREN'T YOUR LIPS! :MAC 311 Lipliner Brush
Feb 19, 2008
Pros: excellent spring, accurate, comfortable grip, easy to clean
Cons: a bit pricey, might have to order without seeing if no MAC near you
The Bottom Line: The MAC 311 Lipliner brush is versatile and a wonderful addition to anyone's brush collection who likes accurate eye or lip lines.
MAC has some of the best brushes that I have ever used. Since finding some of the MAC brushes, I have seen a great improvement of makeup application. As a makeup artist, it is important to achieve the most professional look possible with the products that are used.
HOW DID I GET INTRODUCED TO THE MAC 311 LIPLINER BRUSH
One of the most wonderful finds for me has been an internet site called Makeup Alley. It is a place where many who love and understand makeup gather together and talk about their discoveries and insights in the vast world of makeup.
There was a MAC product that hit the market called Fluildlines some years ago. I did not have too many liner brushes and I was never very good at application of them.
I had used felt tip style eyeliners from Lancome, but when it came to free hand eye lining, I was not very good at it.
Being a perfectionist is tough when it comes to eyeliner. It is very easy to jiggle and make the line look unprofessional.
One day while I was on Makeup Alley, one of the girls there said how much better that the MAC 311 brush was for eyeliner than the traditional 209 brush that most people used.
As a painter who paints portraits, I understand the importance of brushes to get a look that one wants to achieve.
I was able to obtain one of the MAC 311 brushes over time, and was amazed at the accuracy that it brought to lining the eye. That wonderful person was right!
WHAT IS THE MAC 311 LIPLINER BRUSH LIKE?
Here is what MAC says about the 311 brush :
For controlled lipstick or eye liner application. This brush has small, flat, firm fibers and a tapered tip. M·A·C professional brushes are hand-sculpted and assembled using the finest quality materials. They feature birch, linden and ramin wood handles, nickel-plated brass ferrules.
15 cm long ( 6 inches)
RETAIL PRICE: $17
The description does not say, but it appears that these fibers are synthetic, which would describe why it works so well as a liner brush.
When drawing straight thin lines whether it be in painting or in makeup, I have found it to be very important to have a brush with a very heavy spring to it.
That means that when you apply light pressure to the bristles, they don't bend very easily and they tend to stay together well and snap back once the pressure is released.
This brush has lovely spring, which makes it easy to draw thin accurate lines with it.
HOW TO USE
I have used the 311 brush for upper lining, lower lining (though it is more challenging than upper) and also lining the waterline.
This brush is also excellent for drawling straight and curly lines for doing extravagant face art as well.
HOW TO CLEAN
You can use the brush cleaner that MAC sells or Sally's Beauty Supply has a spray cleaner that you can use if you happen to be an artist and need something on the spot.
At home I use Dr. Bronner's Castile Soap to clean my brushes. I dilute it about 5 to 1 and use it to quickly swish my brushes around and rinse in tepid water.
You never clean brushes in HOT water as it could loosen the glue that holds the bristles in place. It can also cause the bristls to wear out faster.
Always let your brushes dry laying down and not standing up, to keep the water from loosening up the ferrule area of the brush which is that silver part that holds it all together.
I use the MAC 311 LIPLINER BRUSH often but I do have a few others that I use even more for eye work. I tend to do a lot of artistic makeup so I often use many brushes on one area of the face. The 311 brush would be an excellent brush to own if you just want a simple eyeliner brush that could double for lips as well.
It might be challenging to keep this brush for both since the lip products tend to be waxier than eye products and this could cause problems even despite thorough cleaning.
