Don't go in the water!

This is a very exciting and quite well-written book. It relates the story of a recently widowed horror writer who flees the city to a house in upper New York state near a lake to try and get his life back together. He befriends a young handicapped boy who is saved from drowning in the lake. This lake has a fearsome reputation, as people seem to have a lot of accidents while on its waters. The young boy claims that there is a "monster" living in the depths of the lake, and he enlists the aid of the writer to help him find and kill it.

That, in short, is the basic plot of the book, but there is so much more to this story, as the reader will discover. There is a quite nasty sheriff who seems to enjoy torturing and killing people, and a female doctor who bonds with both the writer and the boy. Of course, there is the lake and whatever is in it that subconsciously keeps the locals from venturing onto its waters.

There is a lot of fishing information in the book, as I understand that the author is an avid fisherman. Some of it may be superfluous, but the plot line keeps moving toward the inevitable confrontation between the searching duo and the object of their search.

The writing is fast and furious, and the reader keeps turning the pages to discover what is going to happen next. This book reminds me of the Stephen King I used to read before his books became heavy enough to use as doorstops. To me, that is a very high recommendation!
