Cons: Only 12, two wafer doses per box, can be expensive
The Bottom Line: Overall, this is the easiest means of taking fiber that I have ever tried. It's definitely one I recommend to anyone.
In my current position in the United States Air Force, I am in charge of the overall fitness levels for my squadron. In this position, I have upwards of 800 people at any given time that I am responsible for ensuring that they are in shape and ready to go to war at a moment’s notice. Part of my major job is to establish training and weight loss programs in order to ensure that everyone is ‘fit to fight’.
One of the most important aspects of any diet that I discuss with people is Fiber. The ability for the body to process food is greatly enhanced by your ability to dispose of it. The faster you dispose of it, the less likely it is to cling to your body, and become absorbed, so you essentially don’t gain as much of the weight from everything that you eat. Fiber, of course, is also a great means of cleansing your body of toxins. Toxins from the chemicals used in modern foods build up over time, so it is important that you flush those out of your system by providing adequate fiber to your diet. Probably the most important reasoning for having fiber in your diet is that it is one of the best means of controlling hunger. Because fiber expands into a gel in your stomach, you will feel full shortly after consuming a decent amount of fiber. This effect will last long enough to get you between meals without eating chips or other junk food. In military diets, in order to get our troops to lose substantial amounts of weight, we provide a high fiber diet with supplements, as well as a large number of fruits and vegetables. By doing this, along with exercise, we have seen weight loss that is far above the norm of 1-2 pounds per week.
The Wafers One of the best methods of consuming fiber is to do so in a way that is enjoyable. This of course, is true with most anything. If you don’t like the method of intake, then you aren’t going to stick to it during the duration, unless the consequences far outweigh the annoyance of taking it. Fiber is generally something that people are more willing to give up on if they are uncomfortable taking it. This is why I have tried out a large variety of different fibers for myself. I have issues drinking the fiber, so I have strived to find a variety of ways of consuming it that could be done consistently. One of the products that I found in this process were Metamucil Fiber Wafers, Apple Crisp.
The wafers are essentially a crackeresque item that is easily consumed with or without water. I have found that it is generally best to take with either water or milk in order to ensure proper expansion within the stomach.
The Taste The most important aspect of fiber is how it tastes. If it doesn’t taste good, most people just can’t take it for a long period of time, regardless of the importance that fiber plays in their diet. The Apple Crisp fiber wafer is a super-delicious item. It has quite a bit of apple flavor and it is actually a product that I would purchase and consume on a regular basis regardless of its’ obvious health benefits. The item is easy to chew, has a lot of flavor, and goes down smoothly every time that I consume them. I find myself opting to eat these wafers many times as a general snack over most other junk that I may have in my house.
The great thing about these is that my two year old son, really does enjoy them as well. This means that I can ensure that he is getting enough fiber in his diet, while he’s thinking he’s getting a treat. It’s a great win for both of us as I don’t have to battle with him to ensure that he’s getting the proper digestive nutrition. This has also made it substantially easier to change diapers, as I know exactly when he’s going to go to the bathroom each day because he is now more regular.
Effectiveness With any product such as this, everyone wants to know the results, but in reality it’s almost impossible to clearly state them. Each wafer contains 3 grams of fiber of the 25-30 that you should have on a daily basis. This means that you would have to eat several of these to really notice a huge difference, however, the idea is to proactively give your body any added boost possible to ensure better digestion. For myself, I find that if I couple these with a good bowl of cereal or a fiber beverage, the combination of the two is more than enough.
My Diet For myself, I have focused on creating a high fiber diet that goes above and beyond the daily recommendations. I have found this makes myself a lot more regular, cleanses my system, and controls my weight during the times that I am unable to run. I personally consume 40-50 grams of fiber per day, which is a significant increase over the recommendation. By doing this, I have found a huge impact on my overall health level.
As for the wafers as part of my general diet, I generally eat 4 wafers per day, two for lunch, two for dinner, and that gives me a 12 gram increase for the day, this is half of my daily recommendation.

Final Thoughts Overall, I would say that everyone needs to consider a high fiber diet. The great thing is that these Apple Crisps are good enough that you can easily add them to your diet, without the discomfort normally associated with taking fiber. You don’t have the same gas issues that most fiber provides, but you do have the benefit of the fiber, which is hugely important in digestive health.
Overall, I would say this is an excellent product and one that I would recommend to anyone, especially those attempting to find something that their children can consume.
