Works Well, Some Shortcomings

I like Mac Bluetooth keyboard a lot, and despite my initial misgivings regarding its ergonomics, it's probably become my favorite keyboard. It is small, functional, responsive, and elegant in a minimalist kind of way. The abandoning of the numerical keyboard was also a pretty good design decision, as most of us don't use computers all that much for actual "computing," i.e. as a super powerful calculator. However, every once in a while I'd like to be able to do some calculations on a fly, but getting a separate dedicated numerical pad seems like an overkill. That's why Mobe-e's NumPad seemed like a brilliant choice: it adds calculator functionality to your Magic Trackpad, without, seemingly, diminishing any of its own functionality.

Magic Numpad is a combination of three different trackpad covers and a small software program that is downloadable from the Internet. The covers come in a slick, well-designed package with included pen, application card, and a wiping cloth. The program was easy to install, and it worked without a glitch. It comes with a few instructional videos that show you how to use the Numpad, and these pretty much answer all of my questions. The program continuously runs in the background, so once it's installed it will always be available to you.

Like all such thin film covers, the Numpad covers can be a bit tricky to apply smoothly without any residual air pockets. Once it's applied, a cover can easily be removed and replaced with a different one. All three covers feature a numerical keyboard, with additional keys/options for some of them. The signs on the keys are transparent, which makes them hard to see in dim light.

You turn on the Numpad by double clicking on the on/off key in the upper right corner of the trackpad, and you turn it off by single clicking it. The keys seem fairly large and responsive. One of the keys launches a calculator, but it annoyingly slips behind all the other opened windows. While you are in the Numpad mode you are still able to use the trackpad for scrolling, which is a very good feature. Overall, Numpad seems to be functioning more or less as advertised.

One of my biggest issues with these Numpad covers is that they actually diminish the responsiveness of the Magic Trackpad. If you are just casually scrolling, then this is not all that noticeable, but if you are trying to glide across the screen as quickly as possible then you'll definitely feel the slowing-down effect. Again, this is not something that would be a deciding factor in using the Numbpad, but it is comething to keep in mind.

As already pointed out by other reviewers, the price of this Numpad is too high. It is a well-designed and developed product, but it really shouldn't cost more than $10-$15.
